TALK

CURATING AS CONDITION FOR EMERGENCE

Eléonore Varone

Eléonore Varone

On the afternoon of April 5 (Sunday) at 2:30 PM, curator and art historian Eléonore Varone will share her long-term curatorial practice at Making Space. Prior to this talk, Eléonore has been conducting a short-term research residency in the Pearl River Delta. The project is supported by Pro Helvetia, the Swiss Arts Council, and hosted/curated by Wang Ziyun, Wang Chao, and Xu Binghuang.

Before founding Secant Space in Istanbul in 2024, Eléonore had already developed projects across Switzerland and internationally. In this talk, she will introduce a selection of curatorial projects and reflect on the working methods and questions that have shaped her practice over time.

For Eléonore, her practice is grounded in identifying points of tension where creative processes can emerge in contexts where they were not initially expected.

Working from context as a point of departure, attentive to what is at stake within a given situation (territory, history, human dynamics), she develops situated processes that place artists at the center. The works that emerge are always context-specific, shaped in dialogue with their environment rather than imposed onto it. The aim is to create the conditions for meaningful forms and positions to take shape, rather than to produce visibility.

Her work unfolds over long-term, often quiet processes, where outcomes may take the form of artistic productions or the creation of relationships. It involves accepting uncertainty, leaving space for what remains unresolved, and allowing transformation to occur.

She has worked, among other, on themes such as art in public space and in situ interventions, buried histories (including witchcraft in Alpine regions), the memory of places, the role of women in society (focus on western society and Switzerland) and evolving relationships to nature in the context of future worlds.

About Eléonore Varone

Eléonore Varone studied contemporary history and art history before developing a curatorial practice attentive to space and context. At the core of her work lies a strong commitment to site-specific approaches: each project is conceived as an encounter with a place, its history, and its architecture, considering how artworks and audiences interact with the memory of sites and their environments.

She grew up in Milan, studied in Switzerland, and began her professional journey at MoMA in New York and at Lakeeren Gallery in Mumbai. In Switzerland she contributed to the development of a new regional art center, the Centre d’art contemporain d’Yverdon-les-Bains (CACY), curated a major open-air contemporary art triennale in Switzerland (Bex&Arts 2023), collaborated with international festivals such as Les Créatives (Geneva) and Belluard Bollwerk International (Fribourg), and worked with the Laténium, Switzerland’s largest archaeological museum.

Since 2024, she has extended her curatorial practice to Istanbul, where she founded Secant Space. A curatorial platform and artist residency that prioritizes research, archival work, and long-term artistic development, supporting artists through in-depth, context-sensitive processes.
